We get asked all the time in our cafe for food and wine parings, so here's a fab little article about two of the things our cafe is known for:Wine & cake! Written for us by Jane Sandwood

Treat Yourself to These 3 Cake and Wine Pairings

You’ve just purchased a new bottle of wine and want to share it with your friends - but what should you serve alongside the drinks? While there are many traditional dishes to pair with wine, like cheese or Sunday roast, sometimes your sweet tooth speaks up and wants something more. When this happens, you should reward yourself with a delicious slice of cake.

While cake may possibly seem like the one food that is at the top of every diet’s list of “no-no’s,” there's no reason why you can't enjoy the occasional slice in moderation. When the UK is home to many scrumptious cakes, it is hard not to indulge every once in awhile, and it makes a nice complement to a glass of wine. If you are looking to find a truly delightful pairing of dessert and drink, you’ve come to the right place. Here are our top 3 combinations of wine and cake that are sure to make yours and your friends’ taste buds sing:

1.     Chocolate Devil’s Food Cake and Red Blends

Devouring a rich slice of chocolate devil’s food cake will bring forth an overload of chocolatey taste and flavour. When paired with a glass of red wine, you will taste the harmony of filling your stomach with something wonderfully sweet washed down with something smooth and bitter. Plus, chocolate is known to have benefits for your health if you eat it every once in a while, so you can go at it without too much guilt!

2.     Lemon-Flavored Cake and Sparkling White

The mixing of lemon cake and a sparkling glass of white wine will bring lightness to the overall taste, as both are naturally subtle in flavour. This delicate combination makes for an intensification of the lemon in the cake, resulting in an added, delicious tartness. Thanks to the sparkling wine’s bubbles, your taste buds will be excited by the light and airy sweetness with every last sip (and bite).

3.     Red Velvet Cake and Rose

If you want to impress your friends and family with a dessert/drink combo that screams luxury, you can’t go wrong with red velvet cake and a glass of rose. The look of the two adorning your table will be a treat in itself - and the taste is certain to be a crowd favourite. With the cake’s smooth texture and light cream frosting paired with a sweet rose, you will taste plenty of mouthwatering cherry and berry flavouring.

Go ahead, serve up a delectable cake with that new bottle of wine. Your friends will surely thank you for finding the top combinations of flavours through these suggestions.
